What Happens at Dental Checkups

At the dental clinic, their staff greets and welcomes you and makes you feel comfortable. You may be asked to do some paperwork before the dental examination begins.

Dental X-Rays and Oral Examination

During the dental checkup, the dentist will take x-rays of your teeth and jaw and he will look at your teeth and gums to find if there is any cavity, impacted tooth, gingivitis, infections, periodontal diseases, etc. In case he discovers any dental issue, he will discuss about it with you.

Teeth Cleaning

The dental hygienist will clean your teeth which will involve removing the plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth. Since it also involves cleaning the tartar below the gum line, your gums may bleed slightly but it is normal and the blood along with saliva will be removed from mouth with the help of a suction device.

Teeth Polishing

After the removal of plaque and tartar, the teeth will be polished using tooth polish with the help of a rotating brush. The surface of the teeth becomes slippery and the food doesn’t stick to the teeth.

If you need any other dental procedures such as filling the cavities, teeth whitening, or the oral cancer examination, it can be done in another visit as this appointment would only be for teeth cleaning and polishing. You can further ask the dentist about how to maintain optimum oral hygiene for protecting your teeth and gums from decaying.
